Our Top 3 Organizing Hacks for Small Business Owners

This baby is actually being really productive right now.

Implementing creative, fun organizing hacks is essential for any savvy SMB looking to save time, save money and grow their business in 2013. Getting organized doesn’t have to mean spending hours cleaning, or slaving away in front of a virtual file cabinet.

Here are our top picks for life hacks that will make every area of your life more seamless, less stressful and filled with that oh-so-organized glow!

Do Less.

You heard right. The idea of doing less is one of our absolutely favorite organizing hacks, and for good reason. Doing less applies to both goal-setting and to the actual tasks you assign yourself on any given day.

As an SMB, it goes without saying that a typical day is filled with projects, people and to-dos that require mad multitasking skills. The key to juggling everything without losing your marbles is to prioritize, set measurable, attainable goals, and give yourself credit for completing those goals at the end of the day.

For example, let’s say your workspace is a hot mess of cluttertastic proportions. Instead of telling yourself “I seriously need to clean my desk,” (a project that could quite possibly take HOURS of your time), begin by choosing a single area of your desk to tackle first. Give yourself 15 minutes, and see how much of the left-hand corner (or the inbox, or that top drawer) you can get through. If you complete your 15 minutes, you have succeeded, no matter how messy the space may look to your judgmental coworkers.

Write it Down.

Do organizing hacks need to be complicated to be effective? Of course not! (And that would kind of defeat the purpose, wouldn’t it?) The simple act of writing things down can instantly transform your whole world from one of frantic disarray to one that’s cool, calm and collected.

Writing down ideas, goals and daily reminders internalizes each task, making you much more likely to remember it (and actually do it!) later. This is because writing is physical, and your long-term memory is activated when you physicalize ideas in your body. You may find you don’t even need to refer back to your lists, and that the simple act of writing it down is enough to keep you on top of your game.

Get Lazy

Can organizing hacks have double meanings that are also totally counter-intuitive? You betcha!

Lazy Susans are incredible organization tools! They save space, let you access files, office supplies or your favorite snacks, and keep everything out in the open so you can easily find what you need with a single glance. Fill the office with laziness!

And speaking of being lazy, if you’re feeling lethargic, unmotivated or just plain tired, it may be time for a nap. Instead of powering through the exhaustion, see what happens if you give into it completely. Listen to your body, get some rest and marvel at how quickly you bounce back when you let yourself off the hook. After all, no one said you had to be a super hero, right? Your brain functions much better when you’re fully rested, as you’ve probably noticed. Taking time to rest will actually save you time later when your fully-rested self whips through your to-do list like Dakota Fanning at a 3rd grade spelling bee.

What are your can’t-live-without organizing hacks?
