Shoeboxed Receipt Tracker Now Tracks Mileage & Receipts to Deduct

Shoeboxed Receipt Tracker Now Tracks Mileage & Receipts to Deduct

Today, we’re thrilled to announce that the Shoeboxed Receipt Tracker app you know and love has two awesome new features: mileage tracking and receipt tagging! The new app is now available as a free download for iOS and Android.

shoeboxed mileage trackerMileage Tracking

The new app allows you to track mileage using your phone’s built-in GPS for unmatched ease and accuracy.

To try it out, simply navigate to the “Trips” area of the app and click the “Start Trip” button to begin a new trip. Your location is now saved, so time to start driving (after you put your phone down)! When you reach your destination, click “Stop Trip” and the app will generate a trip summary, including the date, ability to name the trip, editable mileage and deductible rate information. We’ll even show you the route you took.

Once you’ve edited and approved the information, click “Done” and the trip info (along with the map) will be submitted to Shoeboxed as a receipt under an automatically created category for mileage.

But what if you have to stop on the way for business purposes, perhaps for a lunch meeting? No worries! You can still submit a receipt for your meal (and show off the awesome app to your colleague) without interrupting your trip.

Now, after you submit a new receipt, we’ll give you three options: “Remind me to reimburse this,” “This is tax deductible,” or “I’m not sure.”

The first two options will automatically create a new category in your Shoeboxed account — “Reimbursable” and “Tax Deductible” — so that you can easily create reports with just receipts that match this criteria. Then you can submit the report to your employer to be reimbursed, or reference the report come tax time to make sure you take all of the deductions for which you qualify.

Not sure what should be reimbursed and what should be deducted? Check out our Tax Deductions Cheat Sheet to learn about the most common deductions and how they can help you save on your taxes.

Don’t delay — Download (or update) the new Shoeboxed Receipt Tracker for iOS and Android!

As always, if you have any questions about our new mileage tracking or receipt tagging features, you can reach us by phone at 919-687-4269 or by email at help@team.shoeboxed.com.

what about for a windows phone???

Are there plans to make this available to BlackBerry users as well?

  • Emily at Shoeboxed

We do not have plans for a BlackBerry app at this time, but an easy workaround for submitting receipts from your BlackBerry device is to submit receipts via email! Just snap a photo and email it to receipts@shoeboxed.com and it will be processed into your Shoeboxed account. Here’s more information on submitting via email:

    What’s a blackberry??

  • Emily at Shoeboxed

iPhones and Androids are certainly more popular, but BlackBerry has been doing some neat things lately! Have you seen the BB10 Bentley? Check it out:

I’m a long time shoeboxed customer in Canada. Why can’t I find the shoeboxed app on the Canadian itunes store? Even stranger… why is it when I click on links to get the shoeboxed app I see ‘Shoeboxed Australia’ in the Canada store.?

  • Emily at Shoeboxed

Sorry for the confusion! The “Shoeboxed Australia” app is the correct app– this is an issue with the App Store that we’re working to resolve.

  • krrh

OK. Thanks. I don’t know if you’re able to edit your app description before submitting a new version, but it would be helpful to note this at the top of the description in itunes

  • Emily at Shoeboxed

Thanks for the tip– we’ll work on it!

  • DM

Can it toggle between reporting in miles or kilometres?

  • EB

Yesterday I made a trip with multiple stops. I continued from stop to stop without ending the trip, I thought it would keep rolling the miles until after I ended my trip back at the office. Apparently it stopped tracking at my first stop. Do I have to make new trips for each stop?

  • Emily at Shoeboxed

A trip can have multiple stops (up to 7), but you’ll need to mark each one. On Android simply click “Add a Stop” when you’re at a stop; on iPhone just click the green pin to add a stop. At your final destination, click end trip.

  • SDH

I just downloaded Shoeboxed, looks good so far. My question – since I’ve made some business trips is there a way to manually add them so I will have an accurate mileage record.

  • Emily at Shoeboxed

Unfortunately there’s no way to manually add past trips at this time– the only way to add a trip is to use the tracker. We apologize for any inconvenience!

  • Leanne

I am looking into tracking mileage and I was wondering if you could show me what a receipt for this looks like?

  • Emily at Shoeboxed

Here is a sample trip receipt. It will show the map of your route including total distance traveled and cost.

  • Leanne

    Hi Emily,
I don’t see anything other than your response…

  • Emily at Shoeboxed

Sorry, it looks like the attachment didn’t work the first time!

  • Leanne

    Thank you!

Hi Emily! I recently tried tracking my first trip with the app and it didn’t save! So bummed. But I’m sure it was just a one-time error. Regardless, is there a way I can still enter the trip into my account? Maybe manually? Thanks!

  • Emily at Shoeboxed

    Hi Lisa,
Unfortunately there’s no way to manually enter trips. So sorry for the trouble with saving that trip! Make sure to “stop trip” at each stop to make sure it’s tracked properly. Let me know if it happens again so we can look into it.
