Shoeboxed Review: Inviting Friends

Tuesday, October 14th, 2008

I know I’ve talked quite a bit about our Shoeboxed referral program, but I wanted to give you a friendly Shoeboxed Review. The majority of people on Shoeboxed invite friends, so I really do want to drill the point home: you can earn money for telling your friends about how awesome Shoeboxed is!

Our invite feature allows you to easily send a message about Shoeboxed to all or some of your email contacts. If you use some kind of webmail account like Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail, or AOL, you can access your address book from Shoeboxed and send them a quick, pre-written message.

So you’ve done them a favor by introducing them to the world’s easiest receipt scanning service. But what else do you get?

Well, for every three people that signs up after you invite them, you’ll get a $45 credit to your Receipt Mail-In account. Now that’s a good deal! If you are keeping on top of your referrals, you could essentially be using Shoeboxed Receipt Mail-In for free!

One other thing: you can track your invites on your Dashboard (the first page you see now after logging in).

So what are you waiting for? Tell your friends, family members, and coworkers! Heck, even tell your enemies, archenemies, and nemeses!

Why Our New Pricing Benefits You

Tuesday, September 16th, 2008

Though we are still synching up our the two registration processes that we have for Shoeboxed, I wanted to go ahead and talk about the new pricing that we have up for our main registration site, http://start.shoeboxed.com.

Over the last week, we have been testing out the new pricing to see what people think, and the feedback has been very positive. We designed it so that it is both cheaper to catch up on a bulk “catch-up” scan job and more flexible for you if your volume fluctuates from month to month.

Perhaps the most popular new feature of the pricing structure is the free bulk scan that you get if you prepay for a year of Receipt Mail-In. For Lite (the newer, better Basic), you’ll get a 250-receipt bulk scan. For Classic and Business, you’ll get a 500- or 1000-receipt bulk scan, respectively. Also, when you sign up for a year, you get 12 months of Receipt Mail-In service and you only pay for 10 months’ worth. So signing up for a year is really the best deal around for getting your receipts organized.

We are encouraged by the positive feedback so far, and are happy with how many people have been signing up as of late.
If you have any questions about the new pricing, don’t hesitate to email or call us.We’d love to hear your thoughts!

As always, you can reach us at help@team.shoeboxed.com or (888) 369-4269.

Shoeboxed: Where Receipts Go

Our New Office!

Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008

Shoeboxed has moved! Our new offices are just a couple of blocks down the same street in downtown Durham, North Carolina. We’re excited about the move, as we have a great new colorful space in the Suntrust building, one of the tallest and most recognizable buildings in Durham. We needed to move into a more functional space, and we are much happier with the layout and size of our new office. It will allow us to more efficiently and effectively serve you as we keep growing.

For all our Durham fans who know the area, we’re just down Main Street further into downtown. We are right next to the amazing American Tobacco Complex and the Durham Bulls Athletic Park, not to mention Locopops, a local favorite.

Our new address officially is:

Shoeboxed.com
212 W. Main Street, Suite 104
Durham, NC 27701

For mail, please send everything to:

P.O. Box 1411
Durham, NC 27702

So are there any implications for you with this address change? Well, there are a couple of things probably worth noting, but nothing to stress about.

There is no need to worry about your receipts getting to us as a result of our move. Shoeboxed intercepts mail from the United States Postal Service before the carrier level to ensure the security and speed of our service. This means that once your receipts arrive in Durham, we collect them, and do not wait for them to be delivered to us. Because of this special relationship with USPS, the exact address on your envelopes does not matter all that much.

For Receipt Mail-In Classic and Receipt Mail-In Express members, you can still use your bright blue envelopes even though the address is old. They will still come to us.

For Receipt Mail-In Basic members, you can use the new address since you have to address your envelopes yourself anyway. Don’t stress if you accidentally use the old address though; your receipts will still come to us.

Let us know if you have any questions, and feel free to stop by if you are from the area!

Shoeboxed on Webware 2.0!

Wednesday, June 18th, 2008

The buzz just keeps on coming. On the heels of The Washington Post, Tech Journal South and WebWorkerDaily, Webware 2.0, a CNET site, wrote a great entry about Shoeboxed’s new My Stats page and Mail-In Dashboard.

Shoeboxed is one of the more inventive and useful services I’ve seen lately.

…a new analytics engine that will break down your spending habits with svelte-looking charts and graphs. What makes this particularly useful is that it can track both your on and offline purchases, which is shown in one of the new graphs.

…a live status indicator that gives you the heads-up on when a new envelope has been sent out. If you’re a user of Netflix or any other shipper of goods this tends to be more important, but in Shoeboxed’s case it’s a nice touch if you want to make sure someone didn’t steal the envelope full of financial goodness from your mailbox.

Thanks, Josh, for the great entry. If you are a blogger, reporter, or other member of the media and are interested in learning more about Shoeboxed, send me an email at dan[at]team[dot]shoeboxed[dot]com or give me a call at +1 (919) 943-5322.

Prepping Your Receipts for Scanning

Saturday, June 14th, 2008

You don’t have to scan receipts yourself here at Shoeboxed. That much seems obvious at this point. We finally give you the option to get rid of the stress of scanning and organizing your receipts by just putting them in an envelope.

Some of our Mail-In users have asked a couple of questions about the best way to prep their documents for scanning, and I just wanted to go ahead and answer them on the blog. So here is a list of things to keep in mind before sending in your receipts to be scanned. These will allow your receipts to be scanned and uploaded into your account as quickly as possible.

  • Please flatten all receipts as best you can. Remember they are going through a scanner, so bundling them or wadding them is generally unwise.
  • Please tape any tears in your receipts. Torn receipts might not make it through our scanners correctly.
  • Please remove all staples and paper clips that may be attached to your receipts.
  • Please make sure that your envelope closes securely after you have put the receipts in. This make sure that it does not open or rip during the mailing process.
  • If you are a Receipt Mail-In Express user, you may separate your receipts into subcategories. We will then make sure that those categories remain. For Receipt Mail-In Basic and Receipt Mail-In Classic, your receipts will be processed as one batch only.

I hope this helps. If anyone has any other tips or tricks that you use to keep your receipts ready for scanning, let us know. We just want to be able to scan your receipts as quickly as possible!

Special Offer: ASID Members!

Wednesday, June 11th, 2008

We were featured in the Washington Post on Friday, and that post was circulated in a bunch of different places, one of which was the daily news briefing of the American Society of Interior Designers.

When that went out to a few thousand people, we got a bunch of phone calls from ASID members extremely interested in our Receipt Mail-In service. We were at first surprised, since we have never specifically approached interior designers about Receipt Mail-In. It seems, however, that Mail-In meets the needs of interior designers quite well.

That’s why we have a new offer for all ASID members:

Call us before June 20, 2008 and get a 12 month subscription for just $149.95, a savings of $50.

Real people are ready to take your call at 1-888-369-4269 (9am-11pm EST).

Shoeboxed allows you to take on more clients, spend time doing the design work that you like doing, and stop fuddling around with receipts. Call us to learn more!

Receipt Mail-In is the Ultimate Budgeting Tool

Thursday, February 14th, 2008

I do lots of different things at Shoeboxed - I guess that’s the nature of working 16-hour days. One of the most entertaining parts of my job, though, is actually using Shoeboxed. We want our user experience to be second-to-none, so we all use Shoeboxed religiously to organize our receipts, and we are all veritable Receipt Mail-In addicts.

Before I started using Shoeboxed, I never did any kind of serious budgeting. Living off my parents, the money coming in always seemed reconcilable with what I was shelling out. I was content just looking at my bank account online to check my balances. But I really wasn’t able to track my spending with any sort of accuracy. Debit card statements are notoriously hard to read because of shortened store names and little reference to what you actually bought.

Champps Receipt

But then I started using Receipt Mail-In, and with basically no effort, I now know a LOT more about my spending habits. I’m now religious about asking for a receipt from cashiers, and a never forget to keep it in my wallet. I dump it in my Receipt Mail-In envelope as soon as I get back to my desk, and then mail it in whenever I feel like it. (Yes, even though I work about 30 feet from the Receipt Mail-In operation, I use USPS just like everybody else) I have hundreds of receipts in my account, and it was really interesting for me to realize that most all of my receipts are for food. Here is a sneak peak into my personal account:

Dan’s Food Spending

It really made me step back and realize how much money I could save by eating out less, and eating at less expensive places.

So this morning? I’m eating cereal instead of going out for breakfast at one of the restaurants across the street.

Receipt Mail-In is the first receipt organization service that makes organization into a reasonable task. Sure, a lot of people save receipts, but it it so time consuming to scan the hundreds of receipts required to get the detailed analytics that Mail-In users (like me) are privy to. Aren’t you curious what you will find out about your spending habits with Receipt Mail-In?

Receipt Mail-In Pricing Updates

Saturday, February 2nd, 2008

Hey everybody,

I just wanted to let everybody know of a small pricing change we are making to Receipt Mail-In. The price per month is still the same: $19.95. Now, though, you can pay for each individual month individually instead of prepaying 3, 6, or 12 months at a time.

For a limited time, we are offering membership in Receipt Mail-In for $9.95 for the first month. After that, the regular price kicks in. You can cancel any time in the first month with no extra charge. After the first month and before the seventh month of your membership, there will be a cancellation fee of $15.

We are no longer accepting PayPal as a payment, though if you have already paid through PayPal, that’s obviously a-ok with us. Now we are accepting payment online with credit or debit cards through a third party, secure service. We are not processing or collecting (or even seeing) your credit card information. You can also pay for Receipt Mail-In by putting a check in your envelope.

Scanning Receipts Can Be Time-Consuming. Shoeboxed Scans Them For You.

Wednesday, January 9th, 2008

Over the last couple of weeks, I’ve talked with a bunch of people that were really convinced that they needed to start scanning all their receipts. I think the idea of having all your receipts all in one place in digital form is a really good idea. Check out our Why Scan Receipts page to get the whole argument for why this kind of data backup is critically important.

But scanning your own receipts is a commitment. It is not easy to scan hundreds of receipts a month by yourself. The average desktop or portable scanner is not designed to be a really fast way to scan a lot of receipts very quickly.

Keeping a New Year’s Resolution that you are going to scan in every paper receipt you ever get is really hard. Buying a new scanner or spending money on receipt organization software is kind of like buying gym equipment from an infomercial: the idea of achieving that goal (whether it be receipt organization or perfect abs) sounds great, but it requires a lot of work, and people often lose focus and commitment.

Say you start the year off by buying a $200 scanner, and then two weeks later you fall back into the daily grind that prevents you from having a few hours a week to scan in receipts. That’s not to hard to imagine. You are then stuck with a $200 loss, and the same pile of receipts that you started with.

What you need is something that can help you keep organized throughout the year. In my mind, the best way to accomplish your receipt scanning goals is to take away all the work. With Shoeboxed Receipt Mail-In, you can do just that. Just mail us your receipts, we’ll scan them in and upload them to your secure Shoeboxed account for you, and then we mail them back to you. You can access them anytime and organize them to your liking and needs.

If you know how to send a letter in the mail, you know how to get your receipts organized. You never have to touch a scanner with Receipt Mail-In.

Now if only we could find a solution that’s that simple for your abs…
