Now that it is January, tax season is officially underway and Craiglist is full of ads for receipt organization and bookkeeping services. Answer Craigslist ads at your own peril.
There is no money-back guarantee on Craigslist, and there is really no way to determine whether the services you are paying for are legitimate or not. Though many people claim to be “expert” receipt organizers, searching for such services on Craigslist is done at your own risk.
It is quite possible that you will be scammed by anyone selling on Craigslist, even when they are selling services like receipt scanning or receipt organization. And even if you aren’t scammed, and you find someone who is honestly hoping to do a good job, you never really know what you are going to get on Craigslist. For example, here is a current posting:
Does your office look like WWIII hit it? Are you keeping up with all new payroll and sales tax laws? If you answered YES to any (or ALL) of the questions below [sic], please give me a call for a FREE initial consultation on how we can help you make your life more SIMPLE! We help small to medium sized businesses with their bookkeeping, payroll, and tax return needs. We are very much “mother hens”…
The WWIII references, the mother hens comparison and the “questions below” blunder are pretty much nails in the coffin on this ad. You probably want to steer clear.
Needless to say, you might feel more comfortable having your receipts scanned and organized by professionals with lots of experience and a brand name behind it. Shoeboxed processes a huge volume of receipts for many clients everyday, and is ready and able to process your receipts and business cards quickly and professionally for your taxes this year.
