SBX: We hear you served as Former Deputy Sheriff and Bail Enforcement Agent before you became a licensed private investigator. Can you tell us a little more about your line of work?
My wife Leslea and I own Premier Investigations & Security Services located just outside of Knoxville, TN. We’ve been in business for three years and are a full service private investigation firm– yes, we are spies for hire. Premier Investigations employs a team of 10 licensed private investigators and security professionals. We specialize in theft prevention and theft investigation.
SBX: Wow, sounds like an interesting job! Do you have any tips for other users about protection against theft?
Identity theft affects over 9 million Americans each year. It all starts with the misuse of your personal identifying information such as your name, Social Security number, credit card numbers or other financial account information. For identity thieves, this information is as good as gold. Skilled identity thieves may use a variety of methods to get hold of your information, including:
- Dumpster Diving. They rummage through trash looking for bills or other paper with your personal information on it.
- Skimming. They steal credit and debit card numbers by using a special storage device when processing your card.
- Phishing. They pretend to be financial institutions or companies and send spam or pop-up messages to get you to provide your personal information.
- Changing Your Address. They divert your billing statements to another location by completing a change of address form.
- Old-Fashioned Stealing. They steal wallets and purses; mail, including bank and credit card statements; pre-approved credit offers; and new checks or tax information. They also steal personnel records or bribe employees who have access.
- Pretexting. They use false pretenses to obtain your personal information from financial institutions, telephone companies and other sources.
Once they have your personal information, identity thieves use it in a variety of ways such as credit card fraud, phone or utilities fraud, bank/finance fraud or government documents fraud. In some cases, thieves can get a job using your Social Security number, rent a house, get medical services using your name, or even give your personal information to police during an arrest. If they don’t show up for their court date, a warrant for arrest is issued in your name!
SBX: What are some ways to protect yourself from getting your personal information stolen?
In order to protect yourself, my advice would be to be cautious about giving your credit card information to anyone (especially if they handle your card). You should be sure to monitor your credit report, shred your important documents, secure your internet connection, invest in identity theft protection (we offer a great product for around $12 a month that will protect you, your spouse and your children), and protect your kids’ identification. Child identification theft has been growing rather rapidly recently.
The majority of our time is spent out in the field and away from our office. That’s why Shoeboxed is such a great tool for our team! SBX: Exactly the feedback we love to hear! Have you tried integrating any other programs with your Shoeboxed accounts?
We currently integrate with Outright and love it. It saves us about 12 hours per week in bookkeeping. We are also currently testing the integration with Evernote to coordinate case evidence between remote investigators. It’s working out well so far!
SBX: Do you have any advice for others trying to go paperless?
I work a lot in the field and like to be hands-on with by business. Needless to say, I’m not in the office a lot. I am also not the most organized person you will meet. Shoeboxed has helped me tremendously with keeping up with my expenses and reducing the paper clutter in my wallet and vehicle console. I have disciplined myself to use the Shoeboxed Mobile App every time I receive a new receipt. It’s so easy and convenient to just snap a picture of the receipt with my iPhone and be done with it. I also like the business card app and am working on building a marketing list using the app. As fun as it is being a private investigator, at the end of the day, we are still a small business and every receipt helps come tax time. Shoeboxed has simplified our processes and “de-cluttered” our office. Now we can focus more on our job of helping our clients prevent theft and not the paperwork that comes with it.
