Designing the Perfect Business Card

When you exchange business cards with someone, you have the opportunity to make a great first impression. And unless you work for a large or established company, you probably have some influence into how your own business cards look. Hopefully we can help you design your own business cards that are both functional and high-impact.

There are two main goals when creating business cards. First, you want to seize the opportunity to make a good impression. A great design with bold colors and a creative layout is always better than some generic business card template. Second, you want to make sure that you are getting all the information across that you want to. A business card is worthless if people can’t get the information from it quickly.

To get inspired with creative ideas about business card design, you can find many examples online, but our best advice is to just open Photoshop and play around with it yourself, and see if you can get your own personality to pop onto the canvas. If you’re design-challenged, there are many create graphic designers out there that can help you create a business card that people will remember.

Often, people can go overboard with the creativity, and fail to make a card that is informative. You need to be able to reference a business card a few weeks later and remember who the person was and what they do. If you need to contact them, it should be easy to do.

You want to make sure you include all the relevant contact information on your card. If your business card is not informative and doesn’t allow people to easily contact you, it has lost it’s purpose. Make sure to include the following, at least:

  • Name
  • Title
  • Company
  • Phone Number(s)
  • Physical Address
  • Email Address
  • Website

All this information makes the business card more functional. When designing business cards, you want to make sure that you are designing them around their function, which includes the content, but also its size and shape. Though it can be tempting to want to be creative with the dimensions of your card, nobody likes a card that they can’t fit into their wallet, or one so small that it gets lost. The standard size will work just fine, and you have more than enough canvas to work with there. With color and a creative design, you can make a good first impression with your card without changing its shape.
