The Shoeboxed Team Spotlight: Joel

The Shoeboxed Team Spotlight: Joel

Today we’re excited to introduce a new monthly feature on the blog: The Shoeboxed Team Spotlight! Each month we’ll be interviewing a member of the team so you can get to know the people helping you get organized.

Joel Bush Shoeboxed EmployeeFirst up is Joel Bush, our Vice President of Business Development. Joel not only leads the sales team and manages strategic partnerships for the company, he also makes sure we all get some exercise during the workday with touch football when it’s warm out and extreme ping pong when it’s not.

As a long-time startup veteran, Joel has worked with lots of new ventures to grow them into sustainable businesses. Here at Shoeboxed, he’s responsible for bringing our users partnerships with many companies you already love and use like Wave and Intuit.

Shoeboxed: So, Joel. Tell us a little about yourself!

Joel: I am a native New Mexican– you know, the big state between Arizona and Texas.  I’m a big fan of the wide-open spaces, green chile, champagne powder, big mountains, big desert, and amazing culture New Mexico has to offer.  I moved to North Carolina (the first time) in 1994 and, except for a couple years in Bend, Oregon, snowboarding, I’ve been here ever since.  I live in Chapel Hill with my long-time girlfriend Lilith and the world’s most awesome dog, Lola.

SBX: How did you come to join Shoeboxed?

Joel: Shoeboxed is the ninth NC-based startup I’ve been involved in.  I was introduced to Tobi Walter (CFO/COO) and Taylor Mingos (CEO) by a mutual friend and immediately understood why this company would be a success.  I joined Shoeboxed in January of 2009 and have really enjoyed the ride from 500 to 500,000+ users.

SBX: So, what exactly do you do around here every day?

Joel: When I’m not defending the Shoeboxed X-Pong World Championship with my teammate Tobi, I handle Shoeboxed’s strategic partnerships with cool companies like Intuit, Wave, Fujitsu/ScanSnap, Evernote and others.

SBX: What’s your favorite part of working at Shoeboxed?

Joel: I have two actually… I love hearing from small business owners and others who are using Shoeboxed. We’re truly making a difference in people’s lives and their businesses, and that makes it all worthwhile. My other favorite thing about Shoeboxed is the amazing team we’ve put together here. Without exception, everyone on the Shoeboxed crew is incredibly talented, creative, and willing to dig in and get stuff done.

SBX: When you’re not working, what would we find you doing?

Joel: I enjoy playing just about any kind of sport and trying to stay in good shape. Lately golf, tennis, snowboarding, and racquetball have been getting most of my play attention. I also serve as an informal advisor to several NC-based startups and try to remain active with a couple of Durham’s amazing entrepreneurial support organizations like CED, GroundWorks Labs, and the Stampede. You can probably also find me enjoying a coldy at Geer St. Garden or Fullsteam.

SBX: Okay, those were easy. Here’s a tough one: give us one tip for staying organized!

Joel: Get caught up. Then stay caught up by developing a good system that works with your habits and your tendencies. Personally, I couldn’t live without the Shoeboxed / Evernote integration and think anyone could find benefit from using these services together.

SBX: We all love our awesome HQ in downtown Durham. What’s your favorite part about our hometown?

Joel: Durham has undergone an amazing transformation over the last several years – I love seeing the progress and all of the amazing companies that are popping up. Our  Chamber of Commerce is one of the best and most progressive in the country. They are making a huge impact in our local economy and creating a great environment for growth, innovation, and entrepreneurism.

SBX: Another toughie: What’s the best purchase you’ve ever made?

Joel: A season pass at Mt. Bachelor. 75+ days of snowboarding a year, three winters in a row was a life changing experience.

SBX: And for your parting words, give us your six-word memoir.

Joel: Life’s too short to work at a big company.

SBX: A big thanks to Joel for kicking off our Team Spotlight Series! Stay tuned next month for an interview with another awesome Shoeboxed team member.

Stay Organized,
The Shoeboxed Team
