Accounting Solutions for Babies, Procrastinators, and Underachievers

We’ve all met them – heck, you might even be one of them – one of those rare, mystical beings for whom doing taxes, cleaning the bathroom, and finding the industry’s latest and greatest accounting solutions is something akin to pleasurable sport. If you actually enjoy scouring the Internet for accounting and organizational software and have your accountant on speed dial, consider yourself lucky. As for the rest of us, peruse our handy checklist to see if you can benefit from our accounting solutions, tips, and tricks for staying motivated (for those days where you’d much rather hide in your Snuggie and watch football than figure out those pesky deductions).

Accounting Solutions for Big Babies

Getting organized and taking charge of your finances means growing up, but it doesn’t have to mean completely losing your cool. With awesome online applications like the paperless scanning services offered by Shoeboxed.com, you’ll feel like you have a parent – or a big brother or sister – overlooking everything from your student loan interest payments to your charity donations. With all of the online accounting software, it’s completely possible to remain an accounting infant and still manage to get totally organized. If you can muster up the motivation to either scan or mail your receipts to the folks at Shoeboxed, for example, you’re pretty much home free. Now get back to the couch, you big baby – football is on.

Accounting Solutions for Procrastinators

Once you realize that the only thing standing between you and an impeccable portfolio is a scanner, that same scanner may very well morph into an evil menace that taunts you every time you walk past it. “I want your receipts….feeeeeeeed meeeeee.” Before you know it, your harmless “I’ll do it tomorrow”-mantra has created the real monster – a disorganized, disheartening pile of receipts, bills, bank statements, and tax documents that have completely buried the dining room table, and your confidence along with it. Depending on how far you’ve let the disaster grow, you can still apply our favorite accounting solutions for procrastinators:

1. Live in the moment

Remember, you never have to scan an entire pile of receipts – all you ever have to do is one receipt at a time. Just like writing an entire book can be overwhelming, stick to writing – or scanning – one page at a time.

2. Stop thinking so much

You know how, when you work out, you’re almost always glad you did? You feel energized and healthy, and ask yourself “Why don’t I do this every day?” It’s not the actual workout that we dread, but our thoughts about it. When your mind becomes crowded with “I don’t wanna” thoughts concerning your personal accounting solutions, distract yourself! Set up a time to work on your project, and don’t allow yourself a single stressful thought outside of that time (we find ice cream to be a wonderful distraction from negative thinking).

3. Just do it

There’s a reason why Nike has consistently dominated their market for nearly 40 years. Sometimes you have to employ a little old-fashioned will power. Remember that you’re not alone – everyone else on the face of the planet has to do this too, but not everyone else is as savvy as you.

Accounting Solutions for Underachievers

So maybe you’re not the kind of person who writes down everything you spend, check your account balances on the daily, or has a credit score that would make Suze Orman jealous. One way to combat the underachiever stigma surrounding your finances is to get organized! Even if what you’re organizing is a balance sheet filled with negative numbers, at least you know what you’re dealing with. From this new place of clarity, you can begin to create a financial plan that makes a multilingual valedictorian look like a flannel-clad burnout from an early ‘90s stoner comedy.

What’s your biggest challenge when it comes to organizing your finances?

Helping Busy People Organize Their Lives: Noura Sonnenberg & BusyGenie

“The beauty of using Shoeboxed and Evernote together is that it is automatic and wireless and a complete time saver.”

-Noura Sonnenberg

Shoeboxed Customer Noura Sonnenberg of BusyGenieIntroducing: Noura Sonnenberg

Profession: Owner of BusyGenie, a Personal Concierge & Lifestyle Management Service

Location: Peoria, Illinois

Website: www.busygenie.com

Shoeboxed: Welcome, Noura! Tell us a bit about yourself.

Noura Sonnenberg: I’m a  former Management Consultant with Deloitte & Touche in London. I absolutely love travelling and spent nearly 12 years living overseas. In fact, I have lived and worked in over 15 countries across Europe, Africa, and the Middle East! I now live in Peoria, Illinois – very different from London (lots of cornfields!), but it is a great small city filled to the brim with busy, dual income families…..a perfect launch pad for BusyGenie.

SBX: So what exactly is BusyGenie? Love the name!

Shoeboxed Small Business Customer BusyGenie

NS: BusyGenie is a personal concierge and lifestyle management business. Our aim is to be the resource busy families and individuals can count on to help accomplish day-to-day tasks, as well as projects. Personal assistant, concierge, lifestyle management, events, chores and more! Our services are aimed at busy families and individuals. Some of our most popular services include: on-call emergency and back-up childcare and grocery shopping – BusyGenie shops for the food, delivers it to the door and will even put it all away for our clients! Husbands and boyfriends love our “Romance Concierge” service. BusyGenie designs unique events for couples – anything from first dates to birthdays to engagements to date nights for busy parents. We will assist with the creative ideas, make the reservations, and coordinate all the details. All our clients have to do is show up and enjoy the romance!

SBX: That sounds awesome! Have you always wanted to own your own business? We’d love to hear about how BusyGenie came to be!

NS: Yes!! I have always been business-minded, and as a child I had the entrepreneurial spirit. I got my start selling lemonade and snow cones on the street corners, and in the summers I would go down to the beach to collect left-behind glass soda pop bottles to get the 5¢ refunds!

Now as an adult, I have an innate ability to visualize and conceptualize business strategies and new business ideas that I know would work well. Sometimes I have too many ideas and it can be overwhelming, but ultimately I think my ability to clearly visualize new business concepts and ideas is what contributed to my successful career as a management consultant.

BusyGenie was born out of a natural desire and talent to organize anything and anyone! Also, as a busy wife and mom, there are a million and one tasks that are always on my “to-do” list that I would love to be able to outsource to someone else to take care of for me. Take grocery shopping for example – what a time-consuming task! Or what about when my child is ill and can’t go to school or his regular daycare? I still need to go to work. Where do I find a babysitter on such short notice? When I started BusyGenie, it was because I myself couldn’t find the services I most wanted and needed in Peoria and knew that I could not be the only mom feeling this way.

SBX: Sounds like BusyGenie is great at keeping others organized – now we’d like to hear about how you do that for yourself! We’ve heard you have a pretty sweet system for staying organized and that Shoeboxed is a link in that chain. Can you tell us about it?

NS: Yes! Love, love, love my Doxie –> Shoeboxed –> Evernote system. I call myself a scan ninja these days because I will scan anything that stands still long enough! The beauty of using Shoeboxed with Evernote is that it is automatic and wireless and a complete time saver. All of my business receipts, along with the receipts and bills of my clients, are wirelessly scanned, auto-uploaded to Shoeboxed and from Shoeboxed, auto-archived to Evernote. Seamless, paperless and completely accessible on any laptop or mobile – all of my clients’ most important information anywhere, anytime at my fingertips….and theirs!

SBX: We’d love to hear more about that. How has Shoeboxed simplified taking care of paperwork for your clients?

NS: My clients love that they can submit receipts in a variety of methods. It really suits clients that have teams spread across different regions, and I am never having to chase anyone to mail me their receipts… they all just “magically” appear in Evernote!

SBX: Our goal is to make staying organized as easy as possible, so that’s great to hear! Do you have any helpful tips for other small business owners trying to get organized?

NS: Implement processes that are automated, standardized, and mobile… and free yourself from paper as much as possible!

SBX: Solid advice, Noura! Thanks so much for sharing your story and wisdom!
