This month the spotlight is on Sam Glover, our Director of Operations. Sam does all the heavy lifting when it comes to operating Shoeboxed on a day-to-day basis, from keeping our customers’ documents flowing in and out of our office to making sure the kitchen is stocked. Read more to find out more about Sam and how he keeps Shoeboxed moving forward at lightening speed!
Shoeboxed: So, Sam. Tell us a little about yourself!
Sam: I am one of the few Shoeboxers born and raised in North Carolina. I grew up in the western part of the state (Boone!) and moved to the Triangle for college in 2004 – Go Heels! I’m a huge sports fan, love anything UNC, and try to be/do as much as possible outside. I live in Chapel Hill with my beautiful wife Jamie and our awesome lab Gracie.
SBX: How did you come to join Shoeboxed?
Sam: I was actually a science nerd in college. I received a BS in Biology from UNC and worked for about 4 years in the medical research world. After wanting to make the move away from that, I loved the idea of working at a startup, and Shoeboxed offered the perfect fit.
SBX: So, what exactly do you do around here every day?
Sam: One of the best things about working at Shoeboxed (and startups in general) is that you get to wear multiple hats. My official title is Director of Operations, and I do manage all of the physical document handling, but what’s truly awesome is that I get to do so much more. I am involved in everything from legal and HR to finance to office and company culture to being the office DJ– and everything in between. Also, contrary to what Joel said in last month’s team spotlight, I, along with my teammate Jimmy, defend our World Champion X-Pong Title weekly (undefeated over the past year)!
SBX: What’s your favorite part of working at Shoeboxed?
Sam: I would have to say the people. Everyone here is highly motivated, exceptionally smart and lots of fun. We all enjoy hanging out together whether it’s taking in a Durham Bulls game or hitting the golf course.
SBX: When you’re not working, what would we find you doing?
Sam: Probably traveling. Jamie and I love to explore new places on the weekends. Whether it’s a trip back up to Boone for some hiking or skiing or a weekend at the beach, I love to get outside and find cool places and things to do. One of the best things about living in NC is the close proximity to the coast and the mountains! Other than that, you can probably find me on my bike or on a hike with my dog, Gracie.
SBX: Okay, those were easy. Here’s a tough one: give us one tip for staying organized!
Sam: For me, the most important thing is to develop a system and constantly use it. Once you fall behind, it takes extra work to get everything back and organized and it will seem easier to not get organized. What I absolutely love about Shoeboxed is that it is such an easy system to follow. I just toss all of my receipts and documents in an envelope and then I’m done. They automatically get organized online for me and I don’t have to do any work — doesn’t get much easier than that.
SBX: All of us love our location in downtown Durham. What’s your favorite part of living here?
Sam: Being a Tar Heel, Durham always seemed like venturing over into enemy lines. When I started working in our awesome downtown office, I saw why so many people love this place. There are always great new restaurants and bars opening up, and once the weather starts to get warm, there’s nothing better than enjoying a cold beer around the corner at Fullsteam or Geer Street Garden.
SBX: Another tough one: What’s the best purchase you’ve ever made?
Sam: Wow, that’s tough. Being a huge UNC fan, I would have to say the ticket I scalped my freshman year to the UNC vs. Dook game. Loudest, best environment I’ve ever watched a game in (and that includes a Carolina vs. Dook game at Cameron). Oh yeah, UNC won and then went on to win the National Championship. Not too shabby.
SBX: And for your parting words, give us your six-word memoir.
Sam: Life’s short. Don’t sweat the small stuff.
SBX: Thanks for chatting with us, Sam! Stay tuned next month for an interview with another awesome Shoeboxed team member.
