Time Management Tips for Thriving SMBs

Mastering the art of time management can make or break your small business. Whether your challenge lies in finding enough hours in the day to get it all done, or in strategically delegating tasks to others, this guide will help you get more done without losing your mind.

6. Do One Thing

True masters of time management never engage in mental multitasking. Instead, they do one thing at a time, both physically and mentally.

When you have 12 things that need to be taken care of before lunch, it’s tempting to begin tackling everything at once. All this does, however, is increase the amount of time it takes to finally complete each task.

Choose one thing that needs to get done, and focus all of your energy and attention on completing that task. Watch your thoughts and notice if they start to drift off towards the rest of your to-do list. When you catch yourself losing focus, gently bring your mind back to the present moment. When you are completely finished with task #2, take a moment, take a deep breath and move your attention to the next item on your list.

The more attention and focus you give each moment, the less time each task will take, thus increasing your overall efficiency and productivity.

7. Do Less Stuff

In addition to giving yourself more time than you need to complete each task, cut down on the amount of items that need to be completed each day.

Beginning the day with a monster to-do list is enough to make anyone want to curl up and take a nap. Instead of attempting to get 25 things off of your plate, focus on finishing three things. That’s right – just three! Ask yourself which three items absolutely have to be completed today, no matter what. Then apply the above rules – give yourself plenty of time to complete each task, focus on one thing at a time, and take ample breaks in between.

Your computer dings every time you get a new email. Your phone sends you audible push notifications whenever anyone on the planet does anything on social media. And don’t even get us started on text messages!

All of that dinging, buzzing and vibrating can be detrimental to your time management efforts, so turn it off – all of it!

Since you have already scheduled email-checking time, there is no need to be notified every time the landscape of your inbox changes. If you don’t need to be available to receive calls, turn off your phone. Schedule a few times a day to check messages and make calls before turning the Mother of All Time Suckers off once again.

You will be absolutely amazed at the amount of work you can complete, simply by silencing your devices!

9. Know When to Quit

If you own your own business, chances are you put in a lot of long hours. When you’ve resigned yourself to being at the office for 14 hours, it’s easy to lose focus and get lazy with your time management- after all, you’re already going to be there all night, so what’s the difference?

Combat the 14-hour blues by giving yourself a hard quitting time every day, no matter what. By creating this deadline for yourself, you’ll waste less time and remain more focused throughout the day because you know you only have a certain amount of time in which to complete your goals.

Schedule post-work dinners and drinks to help you keep your commitment to quitting time. After all, there is nothing more motivating than a really, really good Happy Hour.
